Jay J. Schmid was born on January 22, 1943. His home of record is Ridgewood, NJ. After graduating from Ridgewood High School in 1960, Jay attended Gettysburg College, majoring in engineering. He continued his education at Fairleigh Dickinson University where he majored in industrial management. While in college, he took a job as a chemist with Julius Schmid Inc., a company founded by one of Jay’s relatives.

He was drafted into the US Army in September 1967, and attained the rank of Sergeant (SGT).He trained at Fort Polk, LA and Fort Benning before being sent to Vietnam in 1968 with the 27th Infantry Battalion (Wolfhounds), 25th Division.

He was survived by his mother and sister.

Schmid was killed in action on December 7, 1968. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Expert Rifle Bar and the Sharpshooter Badge with machine gun bar. He was also awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge, all posthumously.

He is buried in Section C, Plot 1 in the New Paltz Rural Cemetery, New Paltz, New York.
