Leszek Antoni Kulaczkowski was born on January 26, 1947, in a village near Krakow, Poland. In 1964, Les and his parents immigrated to the United States and settled in Clifton, NJ, where they hoped to have a better life. Before entering the service, Les worked for a construction company installing aluminum siding.
Not yet a citizen of this country, Les was drafted into the US Army in September 1968. He was assigned to 8th Infantry, 4th Division.
He arrived in Vietnam on September 12, 1969, and attained the rank of Corporal (CPL). In October 1969, his family received a letter from him stating that he was being sent to an encampment outside the combat area for some rest.
On November 23, 1969, Kulaczkowski was killed by a Viet Cong mortar attack. The attack occurred at the rest area that he had been ordered to.
Following the loss of their only child, Mr. and Mrs. Kulaczkowski returned to Poland.
