Roger Joseph Bachman was born on May 30, 1945, in Washington, DC, and lived in Westfield, NJ. Bachman graduated from Westfield High School in June 1963, and graduated from Parsons College in Fairfield, IA, in June 1967.
Bachman enlisted in the US Army in October 1967, and underwent basic training at Fort Dix, NJ. He continued his training in Officer Candidates School at Fort Benning, GA, and then graduated parachute school. He attained the rank of First Lieutenant (1LT).
Bachman was assigned to Fort Devens, MA before arriving in Vietnam in August 1969. He served with D Company, 3-21st Battalion, 196th Light Infantry Brigade for three short months until his death on November 19, 1969, in Quang Nam, South Vietnam.
He left behind his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bachman, and a sister, Barbara. His father, Ralph, was the special agent in charge of the New Jersey office of the FBI.
