Joseph Steven La Faso was born on January 7, 1942, to Steven and Bernice La Faso. His home of record is Garfield, NJ.
Joseph graduated from Garfield High School in 1960. A member of the school varsity baseball team, Joseph was named outstanding player, the year he graduated.
Joseph served in the US Army and attained the rank of Specialist 4 (SP4). He served with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airborne). La Faso was sent to Vietnam in August 1965.
La Faso was killed in action on November 17, 1965, during the Battle of Ia Drang.
His mother wrote to President Johnson requesting that her son be released from overseas duty and return home as she was in poor health. Unfortunately, the President said her son had to submit the request. He refused to do so, believing he was serving his country.
A requiem mass for La Faso was held at Our Lady of Mount Virgin Roman Catholic Church in Garfield. He is buried at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Lodi, NJ.
