Johnnie B. Espy was born on March 14, 1947. His home of record is Montclair, NJ. He attended Hillside School and Montclair High School.

He served in the US Marine Corps and attained the rank of Corporal (CPL). Espy was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines and 1st Battalion, 26th Marines. He started his tour of duty on November 21, 1967.

Espy was killed in action on June 7, 1968, as part of Operation Mameluke Thrust in Quang Nam, South Vietnam from small arms fire. He is buried at Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield, New Jersey.
