Armstead Johnson was born on October 28, 1926, in Evergreen, AL. His home of record is Willingboro, NJ. He met his wife, Inge, when he was stationed in Germany in the 1950s. In 1967, Armstead moved his wife and four children to the United States, settling in Willingsboro. His fifth child was born here, while he was stationed in Vietnam.

He served in the US Army and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSGT). He was a 23-year Army veteran. His last assignment was with the 27th Maintenance Battalion.

Johnson was killed in action on May 8, 1968. He was survived by his wife and five children, Johnny, Armstead, Jr., Ingrid, Revenell and Renate. He is buried at Beverly National Cemetery.
