Davern was killed in action on May 8, 1966. He is buried at Beverly National Cemetery.

To his mom, dad, sisters and brothers, Matt was truly a HERO. He wanted very much to be like his father, a WWII Army vet, and serve his country with pride and distinction. He was a great son, a loving brother and a terrific friend. It was through Matt that I met his sister, Maureen, and we married shortly after high school. Our son was born two weeks before Matt died and he carries Matt’s name, as do several of the nephews Matt never met. I left for Nam the day after my son was born and I arrived in Vietnam the day Matt died. It was a terrible shock and a very tragic loss and Matt has been missed by all who knew him.
