Donald L. Wickline, Jr. was born on June 6, 1946. His home of record is Lake Hiawatha, NJ. He graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School in 1964. He continued his education at Walsh College in Canton, Ohio, graduating in 1968. When he finished his junior year at Walsh College, he married Eileen Wright, his lifelong sweetheart. He went to work for Warner Lambert Drug Company. He especially enjoyed swimming, boating and playing basketball.

Wickline entered the US Army in 1968. Shortly after completing basic training, he was sent to Vietnam where he attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC).

Wickline was wounded in the abdomen, sides and leg during the assault on Hamburger Hill on May 7, 1969, and suffered a concussion on June 8 with the shelling of the 312th Evacuation Hospital at Chu Lai. He was mortally wounded on June 15, 1969.
