Joseph Gerwatowski was born on February 28, 1947 to Mr and Mrs. Vincent Gerwatowski. He had a twin sister, Mary Wroblewski and another sister, Eleanor Kolakowski. He also had two brothers, Richard and Eugene.

His home of record is Jersey City, NJ. He attended Ferris High School in Jersey City. He left high school after his junior year to work at a local butcher shop. Before entering the service, he worked as a mechanic with a Newark industrial firm.

Gertatowski is remembered by a high school classmate as a strong, funny person with a thick polish accent and a hearty laugh.

He served in the US Army and attained the rank of Sergeant (SGT). Gerwatowski took his basic training at Fort Dix. He served with Company A of the 1502 Airborne Infantry Brigade.

Gerwatowski was killed in action on January 19, 1968. He is buried at Holy Name Cemetery in NJ.
