James Raymond Gentile was born on February 8, 1926, at Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ, to Alphonso and Beulah Gentile. His home of record is Camden, NJ. He attended Rancocas Regional High School.

Gentile served in the US Army where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSGT). He began his military service in World War II where he was held as a prisoner for a time. Gentile retired after serving in the Korean War but was called back up because of his military specialty.

In Vietnam, he was assigned to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

He was killed in action on March 26, 1969. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, plot 53 site 383. Gentile was survived by his son, Jay.
