Nickolas Szawaluk was born on September 5, 1947, in Duisburg Hamborn, Germany. His home of record is Hackettstown, NJ. Nickolas and his family moved to the United States in 1949.

He served in the US Army and attained the rank of Specialist 4 (SP4). His tour of duty began in Vietnam on December 15, 1967. Szawaluk was assigned to 3rd Platoon, B Company, 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile).

Szawaluk was killed in action on June 3, 1968, as a result of hostile rocket fire upon his position.

He is buried in Pequest Union Cemetery in Great Meadows, NJ.

Szawaluk earned numerous awards and decorations including the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Combat Air Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm and the Republic of Vietnam Military Merit Medal.
