Thomas C. Rutter was born on November 9, 1946, to George Clayton and Margaret Rutter. His home of record is West Creek, NJ. He had a brother, Michael, and a sister, Patricia. Thomas attended Southern Regional High School in Manahawkin, NJ, and graduated in 1966. While in high school, Tom was on the varsity football team, played baseball and enjoyed swimming.
He enlisted in the US Marines under a special 120-day program, while still a senior in high school. He attained the rank of Corporal (CPL). His tour of duty in Vietnam began on April 2, 1968, while serving with Fox Company, 4th Marines.
He was expected home for Christmas, but he was killed in action on Wednesday, December 11, 1968, while serving in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. At the time of his death, Thomas’ brother was serving in the US Army at Fort Dix, NJ.
Rutter was buried with full military honors in West Creek Cemetery, Ocean County, NJ. His gravesite includes a flagpole and a memorial plaque.
He was awarded the Silver Star Medal and Purple Heart Medal.
