Timothy John Murphy was born on July 23, 1947, to Marion and Frank Murphy. His home of record is Avenel, NJ. He had one sister, Colleen. Timothy was a 1965 graduate of Woodbridge Senior High School.

Murphy entered the US Army in August 1966, and was an honor graduate of Airborne Jump School in February 1967. In March 1967, he was sent to Vietnam. He served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade Company A of the Second Battalion, 503rd Infantry, where he attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC).

On June 22, 1967, at the age of 19, Murphy was killed in action.

Timothy was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
