Joseph Kiernan, Jr. was born May 19, 1927. His home of record is Englewood, NJ. Joseph was a 1948 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. He graduated top of his class.

The US Army was Kiernan’s career where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (LTC). Kiernan was shipped to Vietnam on July 11, 1966. He was the Combat Engineer Unit Commander of the 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Infantry Division.

On June 3, 1967, Kiernan was being transported to a different site by helicopter. The helicopter crashed over South Vietnam in a non-hostile accident. Joseph was 40 years old and had been in the Army for 18 years. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

He earned numerous awards and decorations including the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal with V for Valor Device, the Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with V for Valor Device, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart Medal.
