Dutley James was born on July 27, 1941. His home of record is Newark, NJ. Pfc. James, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert James was born in South Carolina. He was brought to Newark when he was 10 years old. He was graduated from Central High School in 1960 and attended Morris College in Sumter, SC, where he majored in physical education. He was the husband of Mrs. Louise Jackson James in Newark.
He served in the US Army and attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC). He was in the 7th Cavalry Regiment.
James was killed in action when the truck he was driving detonated a land mine on April 22, 1967. An Army sergeant informed Mrs. James of her husband’s death Monday morning. A few hours later a letter arrived from the victim. “It was probably his last letter.” Mrs. James said. “In it he told me how very, very tired he was. He said he couldn’t have imagined how tired he could be until he was sent over.” He leaves behind a son, Lance, a brother Porter and a sister Mrs. Frances Malone. He is buried in Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield, NJ.
