John W. Doherty was born on December 20, 1944, to Mr. and Mrs. Paul E. Doherty. His home of record is Red Bank, NJ. John attended Red Bank Catholic High School and The Peddie School. While at Peddie, he was a member of the Cum Laude Society and earned a varsity letter in Lacrosse.
Doherty was a 1966 graduate of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant (2LT) in the US Marine Corps. He graduated first in his class from Marine Officer Training School in June 1967. From here, he headed for Vietnam.
Doherty was killed in action on July 2, 1967, by a Viet Cong sniper’s bullet, at Conthien near DaNang in the DMZ. He was serving with the 9th Marine Regiment as a forward observer. He is buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY.
