Alan S. Gelb was born on May 23, 1937. His home of record is Newark, NJ. He attended Forest Hills High School. At 17, he enlisted in the Armed Services. After he graduated from college he went into active duty.

He served in the US Marine Corps and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSGT). He started his tour of duty in Vietnam on November 15, 1967. Gelb served as a combat photographer assigned to Service Company, HQ Bn, 3rd Marine Division.

Gelb was killed in action on May 18, 1968 in Quang Tri, South Vietnam by an explosive device. He is buried at Long Island National Cemetery.
