Patrick O’Brien was born on September 4, 1948. His home of record is Ridgefield Park, NJ. He graduated from Maine-Endwell Senior High School in 1966. He began studying at the University of Dayton in Ohio.

O’Brien served in the US Army and attained the rank of Warrant Officer (WO).  He was assigned to the 119th Assault Helicopter Company, 52nd Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade.
 
O’Brien was killed in action on August 17, 1970, when the Huey he co-piloted crashed. While he was low leveling down a river, the tailboom struck a sandbar while he tried to avoid a fishing tower. This resulted in the crash. The location of the crash was Binh Dinh Province. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
