Del Ray “Buddy” Jacobs was born on January 20, 1948 to Elbert and Rita Marie Jacobs. He had three siblings. He grew up in Texas, Indiana and the family later relocated to Long Branch, NJ.

His father, Elbert Jacobs served in the US Navy in WWII, transporting troops and supplies from New York to Europe. After his service he worked in the oil transportation industry in Texas.

He was known as Buddy by family and friends. He loved antique cars, especially his 1955 Chevrolet. He also collected albums of his favorite rock and roll, classical and country recording artists. He also loved football and assembling models. Jacobs was skilled with his hands and made many projects for his family at the Long Branch High School workshop. He also loved John Wayne movies.

He attended Long Branch Senior High School and guidance records say he was a “good boy.” He left before his senior year to join the Marine Corps, but earned his GED while serving. He also took college classes while serving in Vietnam.

He entered the US Marine Corps in 1965 where he attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC). He began his Tour of Duty in October 1966.

Jacobs was killed in action on May 9, 1967 in Quang Tri, South Vietnam by artillery, rocket, or mortar fire while retrieving supplies from a helicopter drop. He was awarded the Purple Heart

He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. He was survived by his siblings; Ava Sue Jacobs (Rosenberg), Dee Kim Jacobs and Gae Lyn Jacobs (Anderson). Jacobs’ brother Dee Kim is buried in Arlington as well after his death in 2002. He was also survived by his fiancé.
