Frederick Goczal was born in Germany on November 4, 1948, and came to this country with his parents as a small boy. He grew up in Bayonne where he attended Mount Carmel School, Bayonne High School and Bayonne Evening School.

Prior to enlisting in the US Marine Corps, 19 year old Goczal was employed by the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Elizabeth, NJ.

He completed two weeks of advanced combat training in Camp Lejeune, NC, where he attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC).

Goczal drowned on September 5, 1968, while on patrol in Quang Nam Province.
