Hall entered the US Marine Corps and attained the rank of Corporal (CPL). He was wounded in Vietnam in 1965, and re-enlisted and returned to action soon after.

Hall was killed on April 26, 1967, while storming a hill at Quang Tri.

According to Hall’s wife, Rose, he seldom spoke of the war or mentioned it in his letters. Mrs. Hall stated that in his last letter to her in March 1967, he did not mention the fighting at all. He enclosed three rolls of film that he asked her to develop. The pictures showed scenes in Vietnam, landscapes and pictures of his friends, but nothing that had to do with the war. The only information she had about the war came from newspapers.
