Arthur M. Rowe was born on March 21, 1948, in Plainfield, NJ. His home of record is Phillipsburg, NJ. His family lived in the Village of Carpentersville, a section of Phillipsburg, NJ. He attended Phillipsburg High School.
He served in the US Marine Corps and attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC). He was assigned to 3rd Platoon, Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines.
Rowe was wounded in action on May 19, 1968, when his platoon was clearing a road leading into Khe Sanh and the enemy attacked. Rowe was evacuated to the USS Sanctuary, a hospital ship located in the South China Sea. He passed away as a result of an infection from his wounds on June 1, 1968. In the same operation on May 19, 1968, fellow New Jersey Marine PFC Joseph Burnham was killed in action.
He is interred in the Gettysburg National Cemetery Annex, Gettysburg, PA.
Rowe earned numerous awards and decorations including the Purple Heart, National Defesne Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Military Merit Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm.
In 2003, a memorial was erected in Warren County to pay tribute to Arthur Rowe and two other Warren County residents, Robert Bacon and Albert Shiller.
