John A. Kalivas was born on January 7, 1948, to Angelo and Josephine Kalivas. His home of record is Vineland, NJ. He attended Chester High School in Pennsylvania for two years and transferred to Vineland High School. John loved music and had a record collection.

He served in the US Army and attained the rank of Sergeant (SGT). Kalivas was assigned to Headquarters Company, 9th Infantry Division.

Kalivas was killed in action on June 7, 1969, during a search and seizure operation.

Kalivas earned numerous awards and decorations including the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Armed Force Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one star, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Expert Rifleman Badge.
