Dennis Smith was born on October 20, 1948. His home of record is Bayonne, NJ.
Following in his older brother’s footsteps, Smith enlisted in the US Marine Corps in July 1967. After basic training, Smith received advanced training at Camp Geiger, NC, and attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC).
On April 4, 1968, Smith was killed in action as a result of an injury sustained by mortar fire as Marine Forces moved out of Khe Sanh in pursuit of the enemy. He was 19 years old.
Dennis and his older brother, Carl, were stationed five miles apart. At that time, Dennis was stationed in Camp Lo and Carl was in Camp Carroll, both located near the Demilitarized Zone dividing North and South Vietnam. Carl was soon sent to Okinawa, after putting in a tour of duty in Vietnam, when Marine officials discovered that both brothers were stationed in Vietnam.
