Robert Nel Carter was born on August 7, 1947. His home of record is Camden, NJ. After his father died, Robert left Pyne Poynt Junior High School in 1962 to help support his mother by working as a mechanic.

He served in the US Army and attained the rank of Sergeant (SGT). Carter was a paratrooper.

Carter was killed in action on February 9, 1968, when a mine exploded in Quang Tin. He was survived by his mother, Clara, and his son, Billy. He is buried in Beverly National Cemetery in NJ.
