Glenn R. Brewster was born on February 26, 1945. He grew up on Mt. Prospect Avenue in Newark, NJ. His home of record is Newark, NJ. He had one brother, Robert.
Glenn attended Wingate College, in Wingate, NC.
He served in the US Army and attained the rank of Sergeant (SGT).
Brewster was killed in action on March 14, 1970. He is buried at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield, NJ.
I met Glenn at Wingate College, located in Wingate, NC. At the time, Glenn, along with many of us, were attending this junior college in order to improve our grades, allowing us to move on to accept athletic scholarships to four year universities. Glenn attended Wingate from 1963 to 1965. He went on to Campbell University.
Campbell University established an award in Glenn’s memory. The Glenn Brewster Award is presented annually to a Campbell men’s soccer player who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership and courage displayed by the late Glenn Brewster. Brewster played on the 1967 team that was a forerunner to Campbell’s nationally prominent clubs in the late 60s and early 70s.
Glenn was an exceptional athlete. I recall Glenn participated in track and field and soccer. We became fast friends and remained so until his death.
After graduation from our respective universities, Glenn and I joined the Army in 1968. Training was at Fort Dix, NJ. Glenn graduated from Basic Training January 16, 1969, from 2nd Brigade, Company C, 4th Battalion. I remember that Glenn was a natural leader. I remember vividly how he reached out to younger recruits who could not seem to handle the physical aspects of training.
Upon graduation from basic training, Glenn was sent to Advanced Infantry Training.
Glenn was sent to Vietnam and I was sent to Europe. We lost touch for this brief period and I received word that he died in Vietnam.
I know this short note does no justice to the kind of person Glenn was. He was one of those “good guys” that we happen to meet. I will not forget him.
