He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and helping his family around the house. Since he was the oldest of five, he was always helping with his younger siblings. While in high school, he worked at ShopRite.

Fred entered the US Army from Flemington, NJ. He attained the rank of Sergeant (SGT).

Zyck was killed in action on June 11, 1969, at the age of 21, in the Quang Ngai Provence of South Vietnam. The platoon was conducting a combat assault of a hilltop near My Trang when it came under intense enemy fire and sustained numerous casualties.

For his service in Vietnam, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters and two Purple Hearts. The 21-year old officer was the third of three buddies to die in combat in Vietnam. He, Michael Baldwin and Van Dyke Manners, were great friends on and off the football field. He was honored as part of the Hunterdon Central High School Hall of Fame with eight other fellow students who died in Vietnam in April 2009.
