Dennis Richard Schmidt was born on June 6, 1945, in East Chester, Nova Scotia, Canada. He attended high school in Kentville, Canada, and then joined his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Schmidt, and three younger sisters in North Plainfield, NJ.
After his 19th birthday, Dennis enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He completed his basic training at Parris Island, SC, and served at Camp Lejeune, NC. Schmidt attained the rank of Corporal (CPL).
Schmidt served with E Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division.
Schmidt was killed in action on August 8, 1966, in an ambush at Quang Tri Province. He was buried with a joint contingent of US Marines and Canadian Servicemen in St. Margaret’s Bay Cemetery, near Halifax, Nova Scotia.
