Michael J. Fallon was born in Jersey City, NJ, on October 2, 1948, to James and Theresa Fallon. His home of record is Jersey City, NJ. He had one brother, Robert, and two sisters, Patricia and Kathleen. He attended St. Aedan’s Grammar School, St. Michael’s High School, and he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1967. While attending high school, Michael developed a keen interest in boxing. He took the sport seriously, and through discipline and hard work, he became quite skilled. He also had a natural talent for writing.
Fallon enlisted in the US Army on October 7, 1967, where he attained the rank of Corporal (CPL). He served a a medic in the 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division.
He was killed in action on May 27, 1968.
While in Vietnam, he once wrote the poignant line, “Here I am knee deep in mud- I who so loved the sand.”
He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal and Combat Ribbon with Cluster.
Fallon’s Bronze Star Medals citation reads:
For distinguishing himself by outstanding meritorious service in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam during the period 27 April 1968 to 27 May 1968.
Through his untiring efforts and professional ability, he consistently obtained outstanding results. He was quick to grasp the implications of new problems with which he was faced as a result of the ever-changing situations inherent in a counterinsurgency operation and to find ways and means to solve those problems. The energetic application of his extensive knowledge has materially contributed to the efforts of the United States mission to the Republic of Vietnam to assist that country in ridding itself of the communist threat to its freedom.
His initiative, zeal, sound judgment and devotion to duty have been in the highest tradition of the United States Army and reflect great credit on him and on the military service.
