Jon A. Baker was born on April 14, 1946. He was the son of retired Army Major Robert and Mrs. Ellen L. Baker. His home of record is Elberon, NJ. He had two brothers, Robert and Walter, and two sisters, Luellyn and Pamela. He was a 1964 graduate of Long Branch High School. After high school, he continued his education at the University of Southern Illinois, obtaining a degree in Architecture. He was very artistic all his life.

Baker enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1966 and attained the rank of Corporal (CPL).

Baker was killed on May 14, 1968, when shrapnel from a rocket attack by Viet Cong infiltrators struck the quarters where he was staying at Chu Lai Air Force Base, Quang Tri Province.

He was awarded numerous medals and honors including the Purple Heart and Vietnam Campaigns Medal.
