Biography


Peter De Haas was born on September 27, 1947, in Tjerkwerd, Friesland, Netherlands. The family immigrated to Oxford, NJ, when Peter was seven years old. His home of record is Asbury, NJ.

He was drafted into the US Army and attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC). He completed infantry training at Fort Lewis, WA. His tour of duty began in Vietnam on April 5, 1968. He was assigned to 2nd Squad, 3rd Platoon, C Company, 5th Battalion, 12th Infantry, 199th Light Infantry Brigade.

De Haas was killed in action on September 7, 1968, in Gia Dinh Province. He was survived by his wife, Karen Schreiner.

He was buried in Stewartsville Presbyterian Cemetery, Stewartsville, NJ.

De Haas was awarded numerous medals and honors, including the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, the Republic of Vietnam Military Merit Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, the Good Conduct Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
