Robert, along with his family, was a devoted parishioner of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Port Reading.  While his siblings attended Woodbridge High School, Robert decided to pursue his education at Middlesex County Vocational and Technical High School where he earned his diploma as part of the Perth Amboy graduating class of 1966.

Robert enlisted in the US Marines on December 28, 1966.  By August 13, 1967, he was engaged in active duty in Vietnam.  During his involvement in the Vietnam War, Robert attained the rank of Lance Corporal (LCPL).

On June 1, 1968, at the age of 19, Robert Hanson was killed in action during a hostile ground engagement while on active duty in Quang Tri, South Vietnam.

Services for Hanson were held at Zlyko Funeral Home in Sewaren, NJ, and a mass at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Port Reading, NJ.  He is buried in St. Gertrude's Cemetery in Colonia.
