Biography


Richard A. Sawran was born on March 10, 1948, to Nicholas and Ann Sawran.  He had two brothers, Thomas and James.  His home of record is Washington, NJ.  He attended Washington High School and graduated in 1966.

Before serving in the US Army, Richard attended Rutgers University for one year where he was part of the ROTC program.  Sawran served in the US Army and attained the rank of Warrant Officer (WO).  He served with the 129th Assault Helicopter Company as a pilot on a UH-1H, Designated #257.

Sawran was killed in action on September 12, 1969.  His death was a result of a crash into the side of a mountain on approach to Phu Cat AFB in bad weather conditions. 

Sawran is buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Washington, NJ. 

Sawran was awarded the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Military Merit Medal and Gallantry Cross with Palm.
