Biography
James A. Masten was born March 6, 1935. His home of record is Columbia, NJ. He attended Belvidere High School, Bloomfield College and Trenton State College.
James entered the US Army where he attained the rank of Sergeant (SGT). Madsen fought in Vietnam for three years and was assigned to B Company, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry, 196th Light Infantry Brigade.
On February 23, 1967, Madsen was killed as a result of a fatal gunshot wound during a small arms fire in the province of Tay Ninh, South Vietnam. He was part of Operation Junction City.
He earned numerous awards and decoration including the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Republic of Vietnam, the Military Merit Medal and the Gallantry Cross with Palm.
Masten is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Columbia, NJ.
